At PitchPoint, we firmly believe that successful marketing campaigns are built on strong collaboration between advertisers and agencies. That’s why we launched the COLLAB system a few years ago, an evaluation method where both parties provide feedback to enhance their partnership. To date, we have conducted 1,431 interviews and thoroughly analyzed 246 relationships, uncovering key trends across 1,837 pages of reports.
In the past few weeks, we explored what advertisers expect from their agencies, their primary critiques, and how agencies view advertisers. Now, it’s time to focus on solutions.
While there are many strong aspects in these partnerships—such as mutual respect and constructive feedback—there’s always room for improvement. Both parties can benefit from a more streamlined and strategic collaboration. We’ve identified six practical solutions to help improve collaboration, achieve better results, and foster long-term relationships:
1. Ensure Continuity in Account Management
A common frustration for advertisers is the frequent change of account managers at agencies, which can lead to a loss of brand knowledge and negatively impact the quality of collaboration.
Agencies should aim to retain consistent teams for each client to build stronger, long-lasting relationships. If staff changes are inevitable, implementing a backup system can ensure a smooth transition without compromising quality.
2. Improve Planning and Time Management
Dealing with tight deadlines and sudden project changes is another frequent challenge. This often results in unnecessary stress and delays in delivery.
Advertisers should involve agencies earlier in the planning process to allow ample time for creative and strategic development. In return, agencies can propose clear timelines and interim check-ins to monitor progress and address delays early.
3. Encourage Innovation Despite Budget Constraints
Although many advertisers are open to innovative ideas, budget limitations often restrict creative concepts. As a result, advertisers may opt for more conservative campaigns.
Transparency about the budget from the start of the project is crucial. By clearly defining financial boundaries, agencies can maximize creativity within those limits. Agencies could also suggest introducing innovation in small steps, minimizing risk while still encouraging fresh ideas.
4. Strengthen Knowledge Sharing
Successful collaboration goes beyond achieving results. Sharing knowledge and expertise between advertisers and agencies can lead to deeper collaboration and better strategies.
Regular workshops and training sessions can align both teams more effectively. These sessions give agencies a better understanding of the advertiser’s business goals while allowing advertisers to benefit from the latest marketing insights and trends. Cultivating a culture of open communication and feedback fosters continuous improvement.
5. Increase Strategic Input
Sometimes, collaborations focus too much on tactical execution, limiting strategic input. This can lead to missed opportunities for achieving long-term goals.
Joint strategic sessions where advertisers and agencies discuss key business goals and KPIs can help align long-term strategy. A 360° evaluation ensures both parties regularly assess each other’s performance and adjust their expectations accordingly.
6. Be Flexible
The marketing world changes quickly, and the ability to adapt to unexpected events or market opportunities is crucial. Both advertisers and agencies can benefit from working more flexibly.
An agile approach, where campaigns are continuously evaluated and adjusted, allows for faster responses to change. This requires open communication and a willingness to quickly adapt ideas when necessary.
The collaboration between advertisers and agencies is a crucial factor in the success of marketing campaigns. By integrating continuity, better planning, room for innovation, strengthened knowledge sharing, strategic sessions, and flexibility into daily operations, both parties can create more value and achieve better results.
